In IFS, all your parts have good intentions for you. Even the extreme parts believe they are doing what they do to protect you and keep you safe. To highlight this, Dick Schwartz wrote a book called “No Bad Parts.” And then, occasionally, inexplicably, a part emerges that does not have your best intentions at heart. An entity that is not even a part of your family of parts. These parts can disrupt our sense of self, our well-being, and our ability to feel safe. We call these Unattached Burdens.
Unattached burdens, also known as legacy burdens, are deep-seated negative energies or beliefs that do not belong to a specific part of your psyche but are instead absorbed from external sources, sometimes across generations. These burdens can manifest as persistent feelings of fear, terror, danger or shame that seem to have no clear origin, leading to distressing emotional patterns and blocking your personal growth.
